Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commissions

Between February 2007 and December 2018, the Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commissions were a statewide network of independent screening panels for judicial candidates, established by the Chief Administrative Judge in each New York State judicial district.

The commissions were governed by former Part 150 of the Rules of the Chief Administrative Judge and were responsible for reviewing the qualifications of candidates seeking public election to New York State Supreme Court, County Court, Surrogate’s Court, Family Court, New York City Civil Court, District Court or City Court. The screening process was designed to ensure that voters were provided with information about the qualifications of candidates for judicial office. The evaluations issued by the commission were available for viewing on the UCS web site.
